Voices of the Land
Sunday, April 12, 3:00 PM
Joie de Vivre Community Choir, dir. Ruth Denton & Dr. Stuart Sladden, with Emily Adams
St. John Brebeuf Church, Winnipeg, MB
This concert will feature Canadian folk music from across the country including the premiere of my new choral work, "Summer Is No More" inspired by the hard work of prairie farmers. The text was based on a poem I wrote reflecting on a beautiful fall setting at Muldrew Lake in October many years ago. Like L.M. Montgomery’s Anne Shirley, I have always loved the season of fall, despite the warm days of summer still lingering in my senses. It is written as a call and response labour song, reminiscent of the recently trending sea shanties, I was imagining this could be a song sung by a community of farmers who work hard, and (spoiler alert!) play hard. The text tells the story of Farmer Jo, who is reminded of the signs of the quickly changing season, from birds flying south to the first frost. The title and chorus “Summer is no more” is a gentle reminder not to linger on the past, because, ready or not, the winds of change will blow.

Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s cantata "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen Zagen" BWV 12

The initial chorus is so poignant that Bach reused it as the foundation of the cruxifixus in his monumental B minor mass. This performance will be in partnership with London Food Bank. All ticket-holders are invited to bring a non-perishable item to the concert where they will be collected.
